This Is Where It Began, A Weekend Getaway To El Paso Texas Is What We Needed

El Paso, Texas is a city with a rich cultural tapestry, stunning natural beauty, and a lively atmosphere. My husband and I met here 35 years ago and taking a memorable weekend getaway has always been on our list of trips to take. So we did it, we took a weekend getaway to El Paso Texas to enjoy the beautiful Hotel Paso Del Norte and visit some of our favorite places. The Hotel Paso Del Norte is a beautiful spot to spend a couple of days while taking some day trips to some of El Paso’s best sites.

A Step Back In Our History

Nestled in West Texas, El Paso offers a unique blend of history, outdoor adventure, and delectable cuisine. We explored the Franklin Mountains State Park, which is where we would go to view the beautiful lights of El Paso at night. My husband was so excited that we were able to grab lunch at The Brown Bag Deli sandwich shop close to Fort Bliss. He would go here almost every day for lunch when he was stationed in El Paso. We then explored the town to find my old apartment, where we spent a lot of time getting to know each other before we moved to San Antonio almost 35 years ago.

Though this wasn’t our first visit back to the city of El Paso, it had been a long time since we had a chance to explore the city where we met. This picture was taken at White Sands National Park, and it was our first official picture together over 35 years ago.

Where To Stay For A Weekend Getaway To El Paso Texas

In the heart of downtown El Paso is the historic Hotel Paso Del Norte. This is the perfect place to unwind in luxury with its four restaurants, onsite spa, and beautifully decorated suites. The Hotel Paso Del Norte was restored and renovated to its former grandeur in 2020. With innovative new guest rooms, a rooftop pool and bar, and amazing dining options, it is one of the nicest hotels I’ve had to pleasure of reviewing. Two weddings were happening the weekend we were there, which is not surprising with the re-imagined event spaces, and the century-old Dome Bar that shines under the 25-foot Tiffany-style stained glass dome.

Pet-Friendly Hotel For A Weekend Getaway To El Paso Texas

Now that we are empty nesters, the girls, our pups, Molly & Riley, go everywhere with us. We were excited to see that the Hotel Paso Del Norte was very pet-friendly. Of course, the girls started their relaxing weekend the minute we settled into our room.

Desert Spirit Spa

We were treated to massages and halotherapy at the Desert Spirit Spa during our stay at The Hotel Paso Del Norte. Located on the 10th floor next to the rooftop pool, they offer a variety of treatments and salon experiences. Not only did we both need it and enjoy it, but it set our morning off on the right track for an amazing day to explore the city and sights.

The History Of The Hotel Paso Del Norte

The Hotel Paso Del Norte opened on Thanksgiving Day in 1912 and has remained one of the most historic and iconic landmarks in El Paso. It was called the Million-Dollar Hotel, back in the day, and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. Featuring 351 luxury rooms and suites and is located only a mile from the border of Mexico, we could see the Rio Grande River from our window. It has hosted US Presidents, Celebrities, and distinguished guests from around the world. The best part of the evening was viewing the fireworks show over the stadium from our hotel window in our room. It was the perfect ending to our wonderful weekend in El Paso.

White Sands National Park in New Mexico is about an hour trip and it’s great for a mini-road trip. You could add a visit to Las Cruces on the way and make it a day trip. This is where we had our engagement pictures taken over 30 years ago. It is just as beautiful now as it was then.

Where To Eat In El Paso

Dulce

Located inside the Hotel Paso Del Norte, this is the perfect spot to grab coffee and breakfast before you head out to explore. I had an oat milk latte and a cherry and cream cheese croissant. My husband had a black coffee with a blueberry and cream cheese croissant. We enjoyed our breakfast in their beautiful sitting area while we enjoyed the view of the hotel.

Sabor

Our first meal on this trip was at Sabor, sort of. We ordered room service when we got to the Hotel Paso Del Norte because we were both tired from the drive. which came from this restaurant. We ordered room service which came from Sabor. It was quick, easy, and extremely yummy, I ordered a Margarita flatbread and a margarita. My husband had a burger and fries, and we enjoyed some soft drinks and water with our meal as well.

El Mirador

We didn’t get to experience this restaurant, but the menu of Mexican food sounded amazing. It is definitely on our list for our next visit.

The Dome Bar

This is the best place in the Hotel Paso Del Norte to grab a yummy cocktail, listen to live music, and learn more about the history of the hotel, and the city of El Paso. I ordered an espresso martini and my husband enjoyed his Long Island iced tea. This was the perfect place to wait for our reservation time at the 1700 Steakhouse, as it is located in the hotel right next to the restaurant.

1700 Steakhouse

My husband said this was one of the best steaks he had ever had. Of course, I had to start with that, because the experience we had in the 1700 Steakhouse was by far one of the best experiences we have ever had at any restaurant we have ever been to. The food was amazing, the staff was amazing, and the cocktails, dessert, and even the coffee were amazing. The ambiance of the restaurant made us feel like we had stepped back in history a bit like we were celebrities experiencing the best the city has to offer.

Modern Ordering For Modern Cuisine

The ordering process, though modern, was pretty cool as it had pictures and great explanations of the different cuts of meat. My husband ordered the filet minion with truffle mac & cheese, and I ordered a chopped blue salad the tagliatelle, which was an amazing mushroom & spinach pasta dish.

Which Steak Knife Would You Like

They also offered him a choice of steak knives, which I thought was a great idea and experience.

The Brown Bag Deli

The Brown Bag Deli was a great spot to grab lunch, as it was my husband’s favorite lunch stop when he was stationed at Fort Bliss back in the 80’s. He couldn’t believe it was still there, and said it tasted just as good as it did back then.

How To Get There

From San Antonio, the best road trip route takes you I-10 West through Hueco Tanks State Park & Historic Site. If you have time on your way back home, I highly recommend the other route. Stay on I-10 until Hwy 91 towards Marfa, you will pass by the Prada art sight. This is a great place for that Instagram shot. There are a few cute small towns to grab a bite and explore. You will then get on 67 to head back to I-10 East. It’s not a very long drive off the main route, and you will also see the exit for Big Bend National Park which is still on my bucket list of National Parks to visit. Fort Davis small towns
