Nestled in the heart of southwest Michigan, is my hometown of Marcellus. This amazing town offers a charming blend of natural beauty, historical significance, and recreational opportunities. Here are my 10 best things to do in Marcellus Michigan. From its picturesque landscapes to its friendly community, there’s no shortage of beautiful experiences to be had in this quaint village. Whether you’re a nature enthusiast, a history buff, or simply seeking a peaceful getaway, Marcellus has something for everyone.
The Top of The Midwest
Marcellus is located in the Midwest of the United States, and just a short drive to South Bend. Part of the village is located in Cass County, and the other part is located in Van Buren County. It is a very close-knit community that takes care of its own but also welcomes anyone to stop by. Located only 30 minutes from Lake Michigan it has easy access for a day trip to South Haven, my favorite big lake town.
Explore Some Of The 36 Lakes In Marcellus
Start your journey by visiting Cedar Lake, the lake I grew up on. It’s the perfect place for fishing, boating, and recreational fun. I learned to ski on this lake, swim on this lake, and had an amazing childhood growing up there. The public access is on one side of the lake, and there is a swimming beach on the other that is open to the public. Another great lake is Big Fish. There are cabins and Francoy’s and a few Airbnbs around the lake. One of the best restaurants in town is located there, The Rock, which has amazing cuisine and great cocktails. hub for outdoor enthusiasts.
Indulge in Wine Tasting
Marcellus is part of the Lake Michigan Shore Wine Trail, making it an ideal destination for wine enthusiasts. Explore local wineries and vineyards that offer guided tours and tastings, giving you the chance to savor exquisite wines while taking in the breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside. One of my favorite wineries, located only 20 minutes away, is St. Julian Winery in Paw Paw, MI.
Hike Through Russ Forest Outside Of Marcellus
For those seeking a more immersive outdoor experience, head to Russ Forest just south of Marcellus. You can go horseback riding, explore the 280 acres of Woods, or have a picnic at any of the picnic tables located outside. This serene sanctuary features diverse ecosystems, including wetlands and forests, making it a prime location for hiking, birdwatching, and appreciating Michigan’s natural beauty.
Shop At Patch & Remington On Main Street
Who would have thought that an art studio would be located in downtown Marcellus? But Patch & Remigton has brought a fantastic art exhibit to the little village I love. Be sure to check out their website for hours of operation.
Attend The Blue Gill Frolic
This annual event happens every August and is a lot of fun for the whole family. The Bluegill Frolic begins with a fishing contest in the morning, and a fish fry and carnival throughout the weekend.
Enjoy Seasonal Farm Activities
Marcellus is surrounded by family-owned farms that offer seasonal activities such as pumpkin picking, hayrides, and corn mazes. There is usually a roadside market either downtown or right outside some of the farms. These farms provide a wonderful way to connect with nature and create cherished memories with loved ones.
Golf at Spruce Ridge Golf Course
For golf enthusiasts, Spruce Ridge Golf Club provides a picturesque and challenging course. Surrounded by rolling hills and lush landscapes, this 18-hole course offers an enjoyable golfing experience for players of all skill levels. Marcellus holds its annual Alumni Golf tournament every August around the same time as the Blue Gill Frolic.
Visit Some Of The Underground Railroad Site
The great thing about Marcellus is there are roads that lead to amazing things. Covered bridges, old historic churches, and even some of the Underground Railroad sites just outside of Marcellus in Schoolcraft, and Vandalia, MI. If you ask a local, they are sure to point you in the right direction, or you could certainly grab a map and start to explore.

Ski Swiss Valley
I saved one of the best things to do for last. Swiss Valley Ski Resort is top of my list of 10 best things to do in Marcellus Michigan. It holds so many memories for me of my childhood. I learned to snow ski here, and though that was a while ago, Swiss Valley is still the best ski resort for a first-time skier or an experienced skier. It is located right outside of Marcellus in Jones. It is family-owned and they have 12 runs and 5 lifts, great for snowboarding or skiing. There is lodging located nearby, and a restaurant and ski & board shop on site.
