The town of Boerne, TX is only about 30 minutes from my house. It is the perfect place for me to take a “Boerne Texas Weekend Getaway”. Here are some of my favorite places, and some new places I had the privilege to visit and check out. Located just outside of San Antonio, it is considered the beginning of the Texas Hill Country. Boerne is the perfect place to getaway, relax, shop, and enjoy some outdoor adventure. This is the perfect Boerne Texas day trip guide, whether you are just going for a day or have the time to visit for a weekend.
The small-town charm of Boerne offers all the amenities of a city, but the charm of a small town with its Hill Country Mile located on Main Street. The German heritage can be felt throughout the town with its craft beer, historic landmarks, and of course its German name. Boerne was named after German author and publicist, Karl Ludwig Börne. He died in 1837, never having stepped foot on American soil. Though I know if he would have had the chance to visit his namesake, who would have loved it as much as I do.
Where to Eat
There are so many amazing places to eat in Boerne, and new places coming in all the time. Here are a few of the newest hot spots to grab a bite, try a libation, and take a trip around the cuisine world. A few of them offer a view of the Cibolo River from their outdoor patios.
Pinchy’s Lobster & Raw Bar
My new favorite hot spot in Boerne is Pinchy’s Lobster & Raw Bar.
Located on River Road, or HWY 46, this was some of the best food I have had in a while, and hands down the best lobster ravioli I have ever had. We started our meal with a margarita and a beer to go with the Bavarian pretzel. The two dipping sauces were a pub cheese sauce and a lobster cheese sauce, yes, it was absolutely delicious. My husband tried the smash burger and fries, which came highly recommended, and like I said, I had the best lobster ravioli I’ve ever had.
They are known for their fresh raw oysters on the half shell, and you can tell why by the presentation.We finished our meal off with two of the yummiest desserts we’ve ever had, and yes, we are still telling people about them. The first one was a Biscoff cheesecake, and y’all know if it’s on the menu, I have to try the key lime pie. They were both beyond great.
Tre Pizzeria
Tre Pizzeria is a Jason Dady restaurant. Jason is one of the best chefs I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. He is hands down one of the hardest working people I’ve ever met, and a testament to never giving up. Owning over 35 restaurants in over 25 years, his new Boerne has a lot of the signature dishes he is known for. One of my favorite things he makes is the cheese covered deviled eggs, and they did not disappoint. I also had the truffle and sauteed onion flatbread. And another thing that is a must is his famous bolognaise. I finished this delectable meal off with a lemon drop martini, and a pineapple margarita.
Pioneer Meats International Deli
Looking for an around the world experience for lunch, or even dinner? Then stop by Pioneer Meats International Deli and grab some South African Biltong.
The flavor is amazing, kind of a mix between the best beef jerky you’ve ever had, and sliced deli meat. They also offer marinated chicken, steak, sausage, and prepared sandwiches.
They have an inside sitting area, or you can enjoy their outdoor patio and watch the river flow by as they are located across the street from the Cibolo River on River Road. Take a stroll through their international market where you will find treats and supplies from around the world.
I tried the Prosciutto and Fig Sandwich and the husband tried the with fries. Both Sandwiches were amazing, but fare warning, the was pretty spicy, even for the hubs.
Coffee Shops & Cafes
Selah Cafe Coffee & Market
One of the newest breakfast spots is Selah Cafe Coffee & Market. Located off Main St., just a little bit down from the Visitor’s center. This Argentinian inspired breakfast spot is run by a wonderful family. The put not just love into their food, but a little bit of their heritage.
We tried a few of their empanadas, pastries, and of course their fresh brewed coffee. They also offer bagels with all kinds of yummy toppings, and assorted teas. There is plenty of parking off Main St. and a little bit of parking on the side and behind the restaurant. There is indoor seating, and a fun playground for the littles outside.
Dienger Trading Co.
Not only is the Dienger Trading Co. a great place for breakfast and lunch, but the boutique in the back is one of the cutest in town. You can find everything from clothing to toiletries. It’s a great place to get that Texas themed gift for a loved one. They also cater breakfast and lunch. Their avocado toast is one of my favorites, and their lattes are fantastic.
Black Rifle Coffee
Coming from a military family, and marrying a military man, I do my best to support any company that supports the military. Black Rifle Coffee Company is a Veteran founded coffee company serving premium coffee to people who love America. It was founded in 2014 by Green Beret Evan Hafer, and along with their amazing coffee, they offer baked goods, sandwiches, and great merchandise. They have raised over 34 million to support veterans and first responders’ medical debt throughout the United States. Black Rifle Coffee has also donated over 70,000 bags of coffee to military organizations, veteran groups, law enforcement agencies, and first responders across the country.
The Richter Bakhaus
Want to try the biggest cinnamon roll in the Hill Country, or maybe some boozy ice cream? Be sure to stop in at the Richter Bakhaus where you will smell that amazing cinnamon roll icing as you walk in the door. You can grab a yummy cup of coffee, fresh baked cookies, or the cinnamon roll that could feed a family of 15. Be sure to try some of their boozy infused ice cream, 21 and over for this one, but they do have non-boozy ice cream too.
Where To Shop
There are so many places to shop on the Hill Country Mile. You can find numerous antique shops, clothing shops, and don’t forget to stop by the Fickle Pickle. The Fickle Pickle is located on Main Street inside one of the best antique stores in town. You can truly spend a whole day shopping in town, and on the weekends, in the Main Square, you’ll find Market Days and various shopping opportunities throughout the year.
Where To Drink
There is no shortage of great breweries, wine bars, and cocktail hot spots in Boerne. Here are a few of my favorites.
Free Roam Brewery
Free Roam Brewery offers live music, craft beer, made in house, and food truck cuisine. This pet and kid friendly brewery offer indoor and outdoor seating, Men’s night every Thursday evening, and they give back to the community every chance they get. The owner, was a professional baseball player for , and you can feel the sports vibe as you walk in. They always make you feel welcome and like you are part of the community, even if you don’t live there, and just visit, a lot, like I do. Friday and Saturday nights are the best time to catch the Live music at Free Roam brewery.
Dodging Duck Brewery
Dodging Duck Brewery was the first brewery in Boerne. It opened when I lived there over 25 years ago and has kept its authenticity throughout the years. Located on River Road across from the Cibolo Creek, you can enjoy the outside patio, which is very pet friendly, or sit inside for a cooler visit during the hot summer days. I highly recommend getting their Bavarian pretzel and beer cheese as an appetizer.
Cibolo Creek Brewery
One of my all-time favorite breweries is Cibolo Creek Brewery. Their outdoor seating just off of Main Street allows you to sip on their craft brews while watching the world, or tourists go by.
They have a large menu that offers everything from brunch to lunch, to dinner. Some of my favorites are the Farmhouse Salad and the Mom’s Chicken Salad Sliders. Be sure to try a flight of their craft brews so you can taste of some of the breweries top choices.
Twelve To Twelve
I love a good speakeasy, and Twelve To Twelve delivers that intimate, laid-back vibe while taking the cocktail experience to the next level. Located just outside downtown Boerne, this hidden gem is the perfect spot to meet up with friends, enjoy live music, and sip on expertly crafted cocktails—from a classic Old Fashioned and refreshing sangria to a decadent espresso martini.
Come hungry, because Taco ’Bout Us food truck serves up some seriously delicious, authentic Mexican street tacos. Try the Nopalitos or Rib-Eye tacos and be sure to add an order of their flavorful street corn. With great music, creative cocktails, and mouthwatering tacos, Twelve To Twelve is the kind of place you’ll want to linger a little longer.
DeVino Cellars
For the wine drinkers, DeVino Cellars is the newest happening spot. But don’t expect a vineyard type of tasting, this new wine bar, has a fun way of bringing wines from around the world to the wonderful town of Boerne. With a Red Wine Menu and a White Wine Menu, you can enjoy wines from Italy, France, Argentina, and many more. They even offer a few Texas wines. Be sure to check out their monthly events. They have weekly Ladies’ Night on Thursday’s, Sunday Mimosa Bar, Pizza Night collaborations with Tre Pizzeria, and fun themed monthly events.
Be sure to try their signature wine, the Debut Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon.
Where to Stay
Stay At The Kendall
The historic boutique hotel, The Kendall, is one of my favorite hotels to stay in. It is located off Main St. and steps away from the beautiful Cibolo Creek. You can take a morning hike on nature trails, grab some caffeine at one of the many coffee shops, and look over Main Plaza from the balcony on the 2nd floor.
I have stayed at this hotel many times and have had the pleasure of staying in different rooms each time. I love that some of their rooms are pet friendly, so those of you who travel with your fur babies, will love this hotel.
Fun Things To Do
Cave Without A Name
We have been exploring this cave since before it was a hot spot to visit. Back in the day, the owner would just give you a personalized tour if you showed up. There is a gift shop, concerts in the cave, a gem sleuthing shoot, and guided tours. The Cave Without a Name is still one of our favorite places to visit and explore just outside of Boerne.
Market Days in Boerne
There is always something happening on Saturday morning at Main Plaza. Whether there is a market day, a show, or just a party in the park, you will enjoy a Boerne Texas weekend getaway strolling through the square. Be sure to get you picture with the bronze statue of Buffalo Bill sitting on the park bench. Check out the Boerne Visitor Center website for a schedule of all the events. There’s always something happening in the wonderful town of Boerne.
Kendall County Historic Jail
Kids and adults will love taking a stroll through the old Kendall County Historic Jail. It was built in 1887 and served for a century as the county jail. After the painstaking restoration, it is now open as a museum. Among many historic exhibits and artifacts from the county, there are also four operable original jail cells.
Boerne Lake
Boerne Lake is one of my favorite places to enjoy. It is located in Boerne City Lake Park and is great for kayaking, paddle boarding, and other non-motorized recreational activities. They are a city park, so there is a charge if you aren’t a local.
Cibolo Nature Center and Trails
One of the new to me stops was the Cibolo Nature Center and Trails. One of the trails starts next to the Boerne Library, just a short drive from Main Street. The Cibolo protects more than 160 acres of Texas Hill Country. The Nature Center is open daily for exploration, discovery, and connection with nature. Walk wooded trails, wander along the banks of Cibolo Creek, and even encounter native wildlife across our five unique ecosystems. Whether you come for adventure or a peaceful escape, there are countless ways to experience nature, right here.
